And this is why I'm sticking it out

[A small disclaimer: so I realize I've had quite a bit of ranting lately. I feel it necessary to point out that I really am an optimistic person & I try to see the good in everything, but I know I probably come off as the complete opposite in this blog.]

Our current kitchen
The reason I wanted to share this is because this is by far the #1 reason why we consider the Rome our dream home & why I've put up with the shitstorm that we've dealt with in order to get it.

Last night at 10:30 at night (and in the middle of watching the season premiere of Law & Order: SVU), I decided I needed to make cookies. And then I groaned. Why? I freaking hate our current kitchen. We have 4 small squares of counter space & I dread trying to prepare food in it. But I dragged out my giant KitchenAid mixer (which basically takes up one of my counter squares) & went to town. An hour later, I was finally finished. When I finally sat down, I told my husband how in a few more months I would have 2 glorious ovens to bake all of my cookies at the same time (not to mention all of that counter space to spread out while I baked). As much complaining as I've done, I really can't wait to build our dream home!

  1. I hear you and I feel you!!! The double oven you picked is really nice!! Only a few more months and we will be in our new homes! Have you started packing? This will help tremendously! I started packing our apartment and will be finished soon and than I have two storages to clear and four classes this semester so I have plenty to keep myself occupied along with visiting the lot during the build! Get our boxes, tape, scissors, labels and make it happen!! Don't wait until the last minute. It's horrible when you wait!

    1. I don't even want to think about packing yet, I am so dreading it (especially with a toddler)! We have moved 10 times in 12 years & I am so ready to never have to move again!

    2. Mama G, your moving track record sounds just like mines. I moved to the DC Metro area and knew nothing about it so I ended up moving often. I did not stay in any one place longer than two years and the last decade we moved the same number of times you did. I am so sick of moving! I told my DH this is the last move and I am ready to move yesterday; however, we must wait until the house is built. So I am choosing to pack everything now! So we are free to use our energy towards other things. I hate waiting to the last minute and being tired, exhausted and stressed! I am a master mover! I have a packing system and we use a moving company. We never lift a finger the day of moving. The moving company is so awesome because they disassemble and reassemble every piece of furniture and each respective box is in the right room instead of stacked in the garage. I keep telling myself I will do a post on moving techniques.

BTW--I am inspired to bake cookies this weekend for DH and my granddaughter! I may even toss a cookie to my dog! I have had the Kitchen Aid on my wish list for years but I stopped baking years ago. I just saw a Kitchen Aid in stainless steel which will match my decor. I can't wait to purchase it and use it! What do you think of your Kitchen Aid? Does it stand up to its name and product usage?

    3. I wish we would hire movers, we've always rented a uhaul & moved ourselves & that is awful! The last time I was 6 months pregnant & that was a fun experience. NOT!

I LOVE my mixer. It was a wedding gift 5 & a half yrs ago & has held up perfectly. I even discovered you can use it to shred chicken breasts! (We like to grill a bunch of chicken breasts, shred them & freeze. Then defrost & use in casseroles.) If you get one, you won't be disappointed. Also, make sure you get the Beater Blade. It has scrapers on the beater so you don't have to stop & scrape the sides of the bowl when you're mixing.

  2. Cookies from scratch on a weeknight.... you are a better woman than I! I totally agree though... I'm already loving my new kitchen!

    1. With a toddler, I have to do any baking at night after she goes to bed since she tries to "help" & ends up a little too close to the hot oven. And what's sad is I go to sleep earlier on the wkend than I do during the wk!

  3. The kitchen is what I am most looking forward to in our new house too! Although, I must say I'm a little jealous of your double oven! =)

    1. Ours is going to be a freestanding range w/double oven (GE JGB870SETSS) so if you haven't broken ground yet, you can check with your SR on pricing. We were only able to get about $200 off the retail price but I know it will be worth it when I make my first batch of cookies!

  4. Yes, please, bring on the kitchen! We have a nice big space for our current kitchen but there's very little usable countertop, so any cooking at all is irritating because half the time I have to wash dishes just to have enough space to work! Looks like you might have that problem too, from the pictures! I will be SOOO glad to not have the bottle drying rack anymore...or the countertop microwave...or useless corners...sigh. :)
